What are the difficulties of choosing an official language in a multi-racial society?

Difficulties that many will face when choosing an official language are plentiful, as demonstrated by the present political climate. Some will argue that deciding on an official language would be beneficial to some, as they feel that their culture has been represented, while others will feel gypped and unappreciated as an ignored minority. You could discuss Noah Webster, who felt that an "American identity" should be created so that as more immigrants and foriegners came to America, they would have a common ground to connect with. yeah, that probably won't get you 500-800, but i hope it helps.
