Voting for the right person?

I was just thinking.... Most people will end up voting for their party affiliation reguardless of which canidate is better. One canidate could be great for America but if that person isn't your party you don't vote for them. This seems rediculous! Why not do away with political parties and concentrate on the real issue which is making America a better place. Instead of siding with a political party, why not just have a couple canidates explain what they are going to try and do for american and pick the best one.
