Will my t-mobile phone work with a different sim card?

I purchased a T-mobile dash a few years bk, since then I hadnt been able to keep up with payments so they cut off my phone service, I still as of now owe T-mobile around $100 or so but in the meanwhile my T-mobile is collecting dust and my friend wants a pda phone. Im willing to give it to him but Im wondering with the money I still owe T-mobile would he be able to use it himself if he replaced my sim card with his own. Im thinking it would but I dont want to sell it to him if it wouldnt. Thanx
